Thoughts on a Photo: One

vancouver wedding photographer first look

Just did a pretty big update on my portfolio and since it’s slow season I’m gonna take the opportunity to do a mini blog series where I will talk about my thoughts on a certain photo over the next 21 days.

Today’s todays photo was taken from a styled shoot where we were creating the first look. For this photo I actually piggy backed off the videographers shot which is rare because it’s usually the other way around. They had her walking around the corner to meet her husband and I just followed behind taking snaps as we walked.

There are a few things on why I like this shot. The first is how natural it looks and that’s because it’s not posed, she’s actually in the middle of a walk. Whenever I’m shooting, whether it be couples for a wedding, portraits or models I always get my subject to do a some sort of walking shot because it’s natural, intuitive and familiar.

The second reading why I like this shot is the tiny bit of foreground blur that you see on the left from the tree. Foreground blur when done right makes the viewer feel like someone who was actually there, observing the moment, which is appropriate for something like the first look.

Lastly, I like how soft everything is. Often times when shooting in the woods it can be quite dark and contrasty, especially with the trees. We found just the perfect patch of light for this photo that even the tree is light coloured.

This photo was taken at the UBC Botanical Gardens in Vancouver.
