Questions to Ask a Wedding Photographer Before Booking Them

Booking a photographer for your wedding is an important decision because after the wedding is over, it’s their photos that you’ll have to remember the day by.

What’s your back up process like?

It’s not uncommon for people to lose files. Make sure the photographer you hire has a rock solid backup process.

How do you work with people that are introverted or closed off?

I would say most of the people that I’ve personally photographed are more so on the introverted side. It’s important for your photographer to know how to work with everyone, no matter how comfortable they are in front of the camera. Everyone wants to look good in photos!

How have you handled an unhappy client or a difficult situation with a client in the past?

Everyone that’s been shooting for long enough is bound to encounter an unhappy client. Mistakes happen and you can’t please everybody. It's important though to know how they dealt with it!

How many weddings have you done?

Shows you how experienced they are which is good for many things.

Tell me about how an ideal wedding day flows for you?

This may vary from photographer to photographer. What they say can give you insight on their working style.

What happens if something happens to them the day of and they can't make it?

Very unlikely to happen, but its good to have that bit of peace of mind.

How will I receive my images?

Most photographers use online galleries these days but some may still use USB’s. You might even find a DVD from someone!

Do you carry back up equipment?

Every reputable photographer should have at least some backup equipment if not a backup of everything.

What are our printing options? Does the price include and albums, prints, or proofs?

Most photographers will give full printing rights to their couples, but not all so it’s important to check.

Based on our day, how many hours of coverage do you think we’ll need?

From my experience, most couples seem to have an idea of how much coverage they’re after but if you don’t, asking a photographer for their opinion is totally okay. The amount of wedding day coverage will play a large role in what your quote will be.
